The Moosehorns will be on your left on Route 15 on the way to Monson, ME. You’re heading for the wild woods of Maine!
When this view catches your eyes, you’ll know your almost there to the BIG quarry!
Okay guys! , now let’s jump right into the slate quarries. OMG! don’t JUMP IN, you know what I mean.
The chain link fence took a great picture, but if you look closely, there is a slate quarry “wall”. This photo taken near the closed (2007) Moosehead Manufacturing Plant.
Just imagine being lowered into one of these quarries to “harvest” Monson slate. Wonder how deep that quarry is?! (see pic above) If you take a look at that link, the quarry looks “mighty” deep. Psst! Someone told me it was 800 feet deep! So who were these brave souls who mined the slate?? Well, twas the Finnish people who migrated to Monson for work in the slate quarries
.
This quarry is on Pleasant Street in Monson, ME. Beautiful, isn’t it!! I love the Birch trees (Monson is full of them, by the way).
Hey, hey, hey, everyone! You can buy yourself a pile of slate!
This view is of Pleasant Street from where I came. (See pic below for the “other side of the mountain”)
Well, all I could see on the other side was another slate quarry!! But with equipment and a building on the pile of slate. Notice the entrance for vehicles on the other side of the quarry. Monson slate is still being processed, but in small amounts, I believe.
Another view of the quarry on Pleasant St ; photo taken from the path along the edge of the quarry. This site is much, much smaller than the one by the old Moosehead Manufacturing Plant. The photo doesn’t give the “feel” of a quarry, but I included it anyway and it’s the real deal folks! it really is the quarry!
I’ll leave you all in Monson AND as always, enjoy the views along the way. Click on the links below for the Monson, ME era slate boom!
