The Crown of Bangor Maine

The Thomas Hill Standpipe

As with many places, there is always more than one way to get there, remember the verse, “you take the high road, I’ll take the low road.” ( back home, it’s the front way or the back way.)  Sadly,  I took the high road: (Nelson’s Almighty Hill, oh oops, I meant Nelson Street) and  swore (to myself)  I’d never come up here again. But of course, I found a user friendly entry/exit point off Union Street when I left. 😊
Watch for this sign on Union Street
A little further up and OMG, I’m getting closer!
And here I am!
The entrance ! Only, ya can’t go inside ’cause the  “castle door”  is closed: opens up 4 times a year so you can climb  the  100 enclosed  steps to the promenade deck.
The plaque above the entrance door.
Just bet those windows follow the steps to the tippy top! Naw, I’m sure nothing is tippy about it! Looks solid to me.
Below  are the plaques affixed to the rock above.
Even the rock is special!
So as I leave this site, do I bow or curtsy to the “crown of Bangor” Hmmm, neither, I guess.
I leave  with one fleeting thought:
Ain’t  she  a beauty!
So when you’re driving on Harlow Street in Bangor and heading away from  “downtown”  look  up to your left and you will see her boldly towering over the foliage: A symbol of  past and present.
